My view as a volunteer at a refloating of pilot whales…

I took this footage on the most recent mass whale stranding of 55 pilot whales just weeks ago at Farewell Spit, New Zealand.

When strandings do happen, Project Jonah and DOC respond with volunteers day after day — racing time, tide, and exhaustion.

People show up time after time to help. ❤️ Being a volunteer is humbling, physically draining, incredible and emotional.

But Project Jonahs work depends on equipment as well as people. And the last stranding showed that they need more:

• A vital inflatable pontoon burst ($10,000 loss)
• A drone is needed to track whale behaviour ($4,800)
• Strop bags, VHF radios, shovels — all essential, all need replacing

Getting married on a paddleboard! 💒 💍

In the 8 years I’ve been paddling, this was my first SUP wedding! And what a privilege to be a part of Eve and Dirks special day capturing their morning tying the knot on a mega SUP with @paddlenelson and @celebrantmegs 📸

I knew I could do the paddling bit to get a good shot but as an amateur photographer, this was a bigggg learning curve! I learnt so much about shooting, editing photos and how long that takes, how to find your style, experience different conditions and hopefully come out with something good 👌

An awesome morning on our beautiful Tahunanui beach, celebrating love on the water, and so stoked to be a part of the magic ✨

👋 I’ve had a little break on posting for a while… trips to the UK, adventures, fun and paddling have been keeping me busy, as well as writing up some of my adventures on my paddling blog!

I started this a while ago and then never really told anyone it was here, so… hello! It’s here 👋

I’ve had so many epic adventures on my paddleboard across New Zealand, and sometimes it’s hard to find resources online to help you plan or inspire your next paddle. I love writing, so I thought I’d share my pre trip research and blogs post paddle.

The curtains have dropped, the popcorns eaten, the people have voted.

Local peeps, young minds and those young at heart have left the building hopefully filled with inspiration for their own adventures across our stunning region, however big or small.

I absolutely loved being a part of this awesome dream team with Em & Em to create the second ever festival. Securing funding for our community film fest, epic prizes, engaging local groups & legends - a lot goes on behind the scenes. And there’s something magical about grassroots - local people and places. And I bloody love it! Thanks girls, @emmamovesmountains & @em.russnz - and I can’t wait for the next one! I wonder what we’ll dream up next for @mdoutdoorsnz 😜

Chasing the roar… 🦌

Earlier this year, I went out into the hills on a red stag hunt with my mate @self_sufficient_rhys, who put together a great vid about our trip.

It was my first time experiencing the roar, and it was such an incredible sound to hear the valley echo with the sound of stags all night.

Since moving to New Zealand, I’ve been curious to learn more about hunting and fishing. I have never lived somewhere where subsistence living as a hunter gatherer is such a prominent part of culture and society before.

As a meat eater, I’ve always believed in sourcing food locally wherever possible and I’m enjoying the journey learning more about intentional ways of sourcing food.

Chasing the roar… 🦌

Earlier this year, I went out into the hills on a red stag hunt with my mate @self_sufficient_rhys, who put together a great vid about our trip.

Learning to SUP Surf? Me too! Learn with me as I share my fave tips that are helping me learn how to catch waves on my paddleboard.

After a recent sup surf trip over to the west coast of New Zealand with my awesome @moananzsup sup surfboard, I’ve put together the most useful advice that’s helping me progress, as it can frustrating as hell.

The last pic is by far the best tip I have, as this gave me my AHA moment when things started to click. I’ve got a long way to go, I’ve made a lot of mistakes but I’m loving the journey!

The most special of moments when this pod came to say hello, curiously playing with my paddle board, staying with me for an hour.

This is the stunning Pororari River Track on the West Coast of New Zealand. A 5km hike with my inflatable SUP in tow — walking through lush native forest in the Paparoa National Park before padding out through this incredible limestone gorge.

I parked up Ken 🚐 at a campsite recently and paid the fee — set the same for one or two people at a flat pitch rate. Again. And it got me thinking…

I love being single and solo camping and adventuring, but god it’s hard on the old bank balance sometimes to not have someone to share the costs with.

Yes the outdoors is free, but gear and travel and accommodation is not, and being single (or just solo adventuring) can cost you more.

This hike gets your heart pumping, your legs burning, your lungs working, and your jaw dropping.

Mt Owen is no stroll in the park — it’s a rocky, rugged, totally unreal mission up the highest peak in the Kahurangi, New Zealand.

Expect marble karst, NZs longest cave system, big crevasses and caves and spectacular views!

This one is one to be super careful on, needing strong map reading skills and a good weather window.

⭐️ Follow your purpose for moving.

It’s easy to lose sight of the why with so many unknowns in front of you. Whether it’s for the lifestyle, the beaches, the wildlife, the travel… let your “why” guide you

⭐️ Choose how you want to show up.

No one knows you when you start somewhere new. There are no expectations from friends, family or colleagues on your social life, your behaviour, how you “should” show up, so stay true to you and who you want to be

⭐️ Say yes to things that push you.

It can be scary to be in a new country, learn how things work, scale New Zealand’s mountains and make new friends. Be bold, do things on your own and watch the magic unfold.

It can be better than you could ever imagine. 💛

Hiking with your SUP… this is what I learnt ⬇️

⛺️ With so many incredible lakes out there, it’s too tempting not to paddle, even when they’re hard to reach 😉

I’d been thinking about hiking up to paddleboard and camp on these alpine lakes in the Kahurangi National Park and it was time to just do it!

If you’re thinking of trying a hike and SUP like this solo, here’s my learnings from my first one!

⭐️ Don’t underestimate how much harder it is to hike with a significantly heavier pack (from 10kg to 22kg) and 💯 take hiking poles to help!

⭐️ Don’t care what other people think.
I felt a little nervous about passing people who might think I was completely bonkers & I’m pretty sure they did, but who blooming well cares!

⭐️ Lighten your pack as much as you can and test out the bag and paddleboard combination at home first to make sure it’s practical and comfortable

⭐️ Pick an easy wide smooth trail for your first one that’s not too long or steep and easy underfoot

⭐️ Don’t plan to do too much.
This trip is all about the journey so take the pressure off and just focus on getting to camp, giving yourself time to relax and jump on and off the water when you want

⭐️ Make it easy for yourself and leave an overnight kit at one spot to keep exploring with a lighter pack when you can!

⭐️ Lastly, the beauty of camping by lakes with your board is picking the best time to paddle so say hello to sunrise and sunset paddles 👋

Coming together to help the whales 🐳

Seeing majestic and graceful whales become stranded and vulnerable… it’s heartbreaking. 💔

Incredible rescue efforts from @docgovtnz, @projectjonahnz and hundreds of volunteers who rallied together to respond from sunrise to sunset up at Farewell Spit, New Zealand. First up was a pod of 30 pilot whales, then another 11.

From keeping whales as wet and cool as possible at low tide to helping refloat them out to sea, keeping them upright and guiding them to deeper waters, our role as volunteers is essential to give these whales the best possible chance.

From my own experience on this stranding, helping with the rescue efforts is beautiful, emotional, bonding, physically exhausting and powerful.

When they don’t swim free, setting up distressed whales to restrand is pretty heart breaking. But you’re full of hope for the next attempt and luckily these two ended in a success refloat each on their third day. 🤞

Thanks to the incredible work of everyone involved who never gave up. 🙏

Project Jonah is on the front line. A very small and passionate team train volunteers to respond, they support DOC rescue efforts, and they work tirelessly to protect New Zealand’s whales and dolphins. But they can’t do it alone.

Farewell Spit is breathtaking, but it’s also known for its heartbreaking whale strandings in New Zealand too.

Helping these beautiful creatures return to the ocean was incredibly moving. But it’s also tiring, a lot of hard work and it’s not always successful. Sometimes restrandings of the same pod can happen day after day.

Up until a year ago, I was still struggling with heart break and sadness. I had picked myself back up, worked hard on myself, had so many amazing moments, experiences, things and people to be grateful for, and proud of. And on the surface, I was ok, but deep down, I still didn’t feel quite like me. Kent wasn’t where I was meant to be.

I knew I needed to make a big change to get my sparkle back. I knew New Zealand was for me, my heart was desperate for this adventure. I leaned in, sold my business, my home, my belongings, gave away my dog (😭) and turned up with no plan, knowing no one.

And my first year living here has been more beautiful than I could ever have imagined.

So be brave, listen to your heart, and start your next chapter, whatever that looks like for you. It’s going to be even better than you could possibly know. ❤️ Thanks for reading xx

Sorry I’m busy, babysitting the pups again 😜

This little hidden inlet in the Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand is something special. You can only access here with a SUP, kayak, small boat (or kayaking tour) on the high tide, and it’s the perfect spot for baby seals and rays to bask in the sun and sheltered water 👌

Seals are super curious and playful ones but they are also wild and a protected species. As always, never approach or pester wildlife or feed them, and only let them come to you. 💛

This little hidden inlet in the Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand is something special. You can only access here with a SUP, kayak, small boat (or kayaking tour) on the high tide, and it’s the perfect spot for baby seals and rays to bask in the sun and sheltered water 👌

Seals are super curious and playful ones but they are also wild and a protected species. As always, never approach or pester wildlife or feed them, and only let them come to you. 💛

📍 Lake Angelus, Nelson Lakes National Park

Another girls trip out one of our fave spots just outside of Nelson.

We made it to Angelus hut and the next morning, got up early and hit the snow to get up to one of the nearby peaks for sunrise, icy snow conditions, bluebird skies and an epic view over the the national park, Lake Rotoiti, Lake Rotorua and miles miles more.

We risked it for a biscuit and walked back over the frozen lake 😅
